When many students begin and momentum builds quickly.
Students in the middle of junior year have completed most of Algebra 2 and are ready for structured prep. Starting between January and March allows for a first test in spring with retakes built naturally into summer or early fall.

Want to finish testing before senior year
Have a busy summer ahead
Are ready to apply strategy to the bulk of Algebra 2 content

Starting after April works well for students who find it easier to focus once the school year wraps. Summer prep is calmer, and retakes in August, October, or November align with early senior-year deadlines.

A Weekly Structure That Fits Their Life: Most students meet for two hours per week — one Math session and one Reading/Writing session — creating a calm, predictable rhythm.

Strategic Homework (Never Busywork): Assignments are delivered through our virtual practice platform, which tracks timing, accuracy, and progress. Each month we offer a full-length, proctored digital SAT practice test that your student can take at home. If you prefer more flexibility, you can also email info@wagnerprep.com and we will set your student up with a free, on-demand practice test they can take at any time.
Once completed, we’ll review their score report and help you understand strengths, timing patterns, and areas for improvement. This is a great first step if you aren’t sure where to begin.

It depends and it’s a smart question to ask early. Many families applying to test-optional schools still choose to test because a strong SAT or ACT score can give an edge in admissions, provide helpful context for GPA, or open doors to merit scholarships. Additionally, all it takes is one school on your list to require a score to necessitate taking the exam.
For some students, especially those with lower baselines or very limited time before deadlines, testing may not be the best investment.
This is where strategy matters.
If testing is unlikely to meaningfully support your child’s application, the investment is often better spent on college advising, where Mike and his team can help your student build a compelling school list, craft strong essays, and position themselves for the best possible outcome. On the other hand, if your student has the potential to test within or above a college’s published score range, even test-optional schools may recommend submitting scores.

We recommend a three-test plan because it removes the pressure from any single test day and gives students the best chance to show their full potential. Each official test provides valuable data, allows students to refine their strategies, and contributes to a higher superscore, since nearly all colleges consider the best section scores across multiple attempts.
Many students see their strongest improvement on the second or third test once they’ve built confidence, mastered timing, and applied what they’ve learned under real testing conditions. A three-test cycle creates a calm, structured path through the process — and often leads to the most meaningful gains.

Every student starts at a different point, has a different amount of time before their test, and brings a different level of effort and ability to the process.
Going from an 1100 to a 1250 often requires building core skills and test familiarity. Moving from a 1400 to a 1550 or higher requires much more targeted, precision-level work. At that range, every additional 10–20 points represents a smaller and smaller slice of missed questions.
Think of it like running: training for your first marathon and finishing strong is very different from training to win the New York City Marathon. Both are accomplishments, but elite performance requires more fine-tuning, discipline, and time. Test scores work the same way.

In fact, some students, especially athletes or those with packed schedules, thrive in a short, intensive sprint. When the SAT or ACT becomes their primary focus for six to eight weeks, we’ll often increase tutoring to three hours per week instead of the typical two. That concentrated effort can be incredibly effective.
