Most Families Start Right
Where You Are Today
Wherever your student is today is exactly where we begin.
“Both of my kids worked with the team at Wagner Prep… totally different kids, but through hard work and specialized help from Wagner Prep, both achieved their goals and got into their top choice colleges… WP tutors were always available when needed and made a stressful situation so much better, not to mention RESULTS!”

You’re in a good company
and you’re in the right place.
Almost every parent we work with arrives feeling the same way:
“We weren’t sure when to start,
which test to take, or what our child
needed. It was overwhelming.”
You haven’t missed anything.
Your timing is right.
And you’re not behind.
At Wagner Prep, we take time to understand
your student as an individual: how they learn,
what motivates them, and what support they
need to reach their goals. There is no perfect
starting point, no one-size-fits-all calendar, and
nothing about your timeline that we can’t work with.
Who We Work With
Personalized Support for Every Starting Point
Students begin test prep at different
moments for different reasons — and
each one is valid. Our role is to meet
them where they are, build a plan that
fits their life, and support them with calm,
consistent structure.
What makes the biggest difference is not
when they start, but the partnership they
step into: steady attendance, consistent
practice, and a genuine desire to improve.
Here’s how we guide students starting at
different points in their high school journey:
-
When many students begin and momentum builds quickly.
Students in the middle of junior year have completed most of Algebra 2 and are ready for structured prep. Starting between January and March allows for a first test in spring with retakes built naturally into summer or early fall.
Good fit for students who:
Want to finish testing before senior year
Have a busy summer ahead
Are ready to apply strategy to the bulk of Algebra 2 content
-
A strong option once APs and finals quiet down.
Starting after April works well for students who find it easier to focus once the school year wraps. Summer prep is calmer, and retakes in August, October, or November align with early senior-year deadlines.
Good fit for students who:
Prefer starting at the end of Algebra 2
Want to focus on GPA first, then test scores
Want to complete testing by early senior year
-
Ideal for students who want a head start or are advanced in math.
Most students who start in late 10th grade begin between May and September. This reduces pressure during junior year. For sophomores finishing Algebra 2, early junior-year testing helps preserve their math foundation before it fades.
Good fit for students who:
Prefer slow, steady preparation
Are completing Algebra 2 early and may benefit from a junior-year fall test
Want to reduce junior-year stress and spread out testing
-
For students ready to push from strong to standout.
These students benefit from customized timelines focused on test-maker thinking, advanced strategy, and targeted drills that move scores from “good” to “great” and into the highest percentiles (1500+ on the SAT | 34+ composite on the ACT).
Good fit for students who:
Already have a strong baseline score
Aim for selective colleges, honors programs, or competitive merit scholarships
Thrive with precision-level coaching and advanced strategy work
Curious which path fits your child best?

How Personalized Tutoring
Works at Wagner Prep
A Calm, Intentional, Relationship-Driven Approach
Personalized tutoring at Wagner Prep is not a template or a program you fit into.
It’s a relationship built on understanding how your student thinks, learns, and responds to guidance.
We combine expert teaching, adaptive strategy, and real-time data to create a thoughtful plan that helps students build confidence, strengthen skills, and raise their score intentionally — never anxiously.
Expert Instruction: Your student works one-on-one with dedicated tutors who collaborate closely with Marley, our Head of Instruction. Every session is strategic, consistent, and tailored. Parents consistently describe our tutors as patient, deeply supportive, and invested in their child’s success.
Proven Teaching Model: We follow the gold-standard Gradual Release approach: I do, we do, you do. Students first see strategies modeled, then practice them with guidance, and finally apply them independently with growing mastery. It’s simple, steady, and remarkably effective.
A Weekly Structure That Fits Their Life: Most students meet for two hours per week — one Math session and one Reading/Writing session — creating a calm, predictable rhythm.
As students progress, sessions shift naturally from building foundations → to timing → stamina → and confident test-day strategy.
Strategic Homework (Never Busywork): Assignments are delivered through our virtual practice platform, which tracks timing, accuracy, and progress. Tutors can see how long students spend on each question and assign targeted drills that build skills faster. This keeps homework targeted, efficient, personalized, and never overwhelming.
Clear Progress Tracking: After every session, families receive an update outlining what was covered, how the student is performing, and next steps so you always know where things stand.

Why Families Trust Wagner Prep
A Personalized, Student-First Experience Grounded in Care and Expertise
More than a decade ago, founder Mike Wagner left the high school classroom to create a different kind of tutoring model — one rooted in personal attention, trusted partnership, and student-first service.
Since then, Wagner Prep has supported hundreds of students in raising their scores, strengthening their applications, and getting into colleges where they thrive both academically and personally.
Families consistently describe our team as supportive, responsive, and deeply invested in their child’s success:
“Mike and his team were fantastic to work with. Highly customized support, incredibly transparent communication throughout, and worth every penny. My son’s score increased almost 300 points after just a few weeks of working with Wagner Prep.”
— Bethanie B., Google Review
“I highly recommend Wagner Prep. Their experienced tutors helped my daughter prepare for her ACT in a skilled and thoughtful way. They took into account her strengths and challenges… Most importantly, my daughter enjoyed working with their team and found that they really helped make an inherently stressful process much more manageable.”

Frequently Asked Questions
-
It depends and it’s a smart question to ask early. Many families applying to test-optional schools still choose to test because a strong SAT or ACT score can give an edge in admissions, provide helpful context for GPA, or open doors to merit scholarships. Additionally, all it takes is one school on your list to require a score to necessitate taking the exam.
For some students, especially those with lower baselines or very limited time before deadlines, testing may not be the best investment.
This is where strategy matters.
If testing is unlikely to meaningfully support your child’s application, the investment is often better spent on college advising, where Mike and his team can help your student build a compelling school list, craft strong essays, and position themselves for the best possible outcome. On the other hand, if your student has the potential to test within or above a college’s published score range, even test-optional schools may recommend submitting scores.
If you’re considering not testing or just want guidance, the best next step is a complimentary college advising session with our team. We’ll look at your student’s baseline, goals, and college list and help you decide whether testing is worth your time, energy, and investment.
-
We recommend a three-test plan because it removes the pressure from any single test day and gives students the best chance to show their full potential. Each official test provides valuable data, allows students to refine their strategies, and contributes to a higher superscore, since nearly all colleges consider the best section scores across multiple attempts.
Many students see their strongest improvement on the second or third test once they’ve built confidence, mastered timing, and applied what they’ve learned under real testing conditions. A three-test cycle creates a calm, structured path through the process — and often leads to the most meaningful gains.
-
Right above this section, you will see several case studies that show the types of score increases our students have achieved. We do not publish a single “average” increase because it is misleading. Every student starts at a different point, has a different amount of time before their test, and brings a different level of effort and ability to the process.
Going from an 1100 to a 1250 often requires building core skills and test familiarity. Moving from a 1400 to a 1550 or higher requires much more targeted, precision-level work. At that range, every additional 10–20 points represents a smaller and smaller slice of missed questions.
Think of it like running: training for your first marathon and finishing strong is very different from training to win the New York City Marathon. Both are accomplishments, but elite performance requires more fine-tuning, discipline, and time. Test scores work the same way.
What we can promise is a clear, structured partnership. You’ll receive detailed notes after every session and your student will complete full practice exams, so you can track progress the whole way. Improvement isn’t always perfectly linear, but it is measurable and because of the regular practice tests, there are no surprises on test day.
-
Yes. Your plan is flexible. You only pay for the sessions you use, and we can adjust weekly pacing around APs, sports, finals, travel, and other commitments.
-
Most test prep programs rely on generic strategies, mass-produced curriculum, or oversized classes. Wagner Prep is different.
We offer personalized one-on-one tutoring grounded in:
A proven teaching model — The gold-standard “I do, we do, you do” structure builds independence step by step, helping students gain real mastery and confidence.
Expert instructors — Our tutors collaborate closely with our Head of Instruction, Marley Perlstein, ensuring every student's plan is thoughtful, strategic, and fully personalized.
Data-driven support — Students work in HighScores.ai, allowing tutors to track timing, accuracy, and progress to assign targeted drills that accelerate growth.
Clear communication — Families receive brief updates after each session, so you always know what was covered and what comes next.
A student-first approach — We tailor tutoring around your child’s schedule, goals, and learning style. No one-size-fits-all curriculum, ever.
-
We match students with tutors based on personality fit, learning style, schedule, and how they prefer to communicate. It’s important that your child feels comfortable and supported from the very beginning. Every tutor also collaborates closely with Marley, our Head of Instruction, to ensure your student’s plan is strategic, consistent, and aligned with their goals from the very first session.
-
Most students complete around 20 hours of focused prep during their first test cycle — typically one hour of Math and one hour of Reading/Writing per week.
Students aiming for selective schools or elite score ranges may continue beyond that with a more targeted plan.
We’ll outline a personalized timeline after reviewing your student’s goals, baseline, school schedule, and preferred test dates.
-
Absolutely. While more time allows for a calmer pace, many students start later and still make meaningful progress through focused, high-impact sessions and strategic homework.
In fact, some students, especially athletes or those with packed schedules, thrive in a short, intensive sprint. When the SAT or ACT becomes their primary focus for six to eight weeks, we’ll often increase tutoring to three hours per week instead of the typical two. That concentrated effort can be incredibly effective.
