Taking the SAT or ACT This Fall? How to Prep Smart — Even With a Busy Schedule
Published by Wagner Prep | Your Partner in Academic Excellence
Junior year is when testing starts to matter—and for many students, that first official SAT or ACT happens in the fall.
Maybe your student already has a date on the calendar. Maybe they’re still deciding between tests. Either way, fall is a great time to get started, see where things stand, and build a smart strategy from there.
At Wagner Prep, we know how full junior year gets. Between APs, sports, and everything else, it can feel like there’s never a good time to prep. But it’s not about doing everything all at once—it’s about starting strong, using time wisely, and knowing what to do next.
Here’s how to make test prep work this fall, even when life is busy.
Step 1: Get That First Test on the Calendar
The best way to get started? Sign up for a real test. Whether your student picks the SAT or ACT, registering now sets the timeline—and helps everything else fall into place.
Why test early? That first score is a benchmark. It shows where your student stands, how close they are to their goals, and what kind of prep they’ll need moving forward. It also gives plenty of time to retest (which most students do at least once).
Upcoming Dates for Fall 2025:
SAT: October 4, November 8, December 6
ACT: October 18, December 13

Step 2: Start Small, Stay Steady
We recommend most students aim for 20 hours of prep before their first test—typically one hour of math and one hour of English per week for 10 weeks.
The first few weeks focus on building a strong foundation:
Core content review
Strategy for each section
Smart timing techniques
Then, we shift to more targeted drills:
Review mistakes
Strengthen weak spots
Practice under real test conditions
Not every student moves at the same pace. Some fly through the early material and spend more time on test-day endurance. Others need a little extra support up front. Our tutors adjust to fit your student’s learning style and schedule—so prep always stays productive.
Step 3: Track What’s Working (and What’s Not)
After that first test, don’t just look at the score—dig into what it says.
Were they close to their goal?
Did one section drag them down?
Did timing issues or nerves get in the way?
This is when we pause and reassess. Our tutors review every score report, section breakdown, and practice test to help students see exactly where to focus next.
If something’s not working—timing, strategy, content—we change the plan. That’s the benefit of personalized prep. We’re not locked into a program. We’re locked into your student.
Step 4: Use the Time Between Tests Wisely
There are more chances to test later in junior year—but the window closes quickly, especially for students applying Early Decision or Early Action.
That’s why we recommend a second test in the spring, with light prep in between. Even 1–2 hours a week can make a big difference, especially if the focus is tight.
And once your student has a score they’re happy with? We shift gears to help them tackle essays, interviews, and final college planning with confidence.
Step 5: Don’t Wait for Senior Year
Yes, it’s possible to test again in senior fall—but it’s not ideal. Senior year brings its own pressures: essays, deadlines, AP coursework, and a much more compressed timeline.
Testing earlier gives your student:
More opportunities to improve
Time to use scores strategically (for merit aid, program fit, or admissions boosts)
Peace of mind going into application season
Real Support for Busy Students
We know test prep isn’t the only thing happening in your student’s life. That’s why every Wagner Prep plan is built with your child’s whole calendar in mind.
APs? Sports? Travel? We work around it.
Need a slower ramp-up? We pace it.
Want to test and be done early? We can make that happen too.
