Your timing is right. You haven’t missed anything. And you’re not behind.
Almost every parent we work with arrives feeling uncertain about timing, unsure which test to take, or worried they've already waited too long. You haven't. There's no perfect starting point, and nothing about your timeline that we can't work with.
At Wagner Prep, we take time to understand your student as an individual: how they learn, what motivates them, and what support they need to reach their goals.
Wherever your student is today is exactly where we begin.
“Both of my kids worked with the team at Wagner Prep. Totally different kids, but through hard work and specialized help from WP, both achieved their goals and got into their top choice colleges. WP tutors were always available when needed and made a stressful situation so much better, not to mention RESULTS!”

Already spent money on tutoring that didn’t work?
A lot of families find us after a group class, a marketplace tutor, or a program that felt formulaic. The score barely moved, or actually dropped. Now they’re being asked to spend money again, and that skepticism is completely fair. Here’s what we do differently:
WHAT MOST PROGRAMS DELIVER
20-30 kids in a Zoom class
Tutors with no instructional oversight
Same curriculum for every student
No data on what your child actually got wrong
Guarantee with fine print that voids on one missed class
WHAT WAGNER PREP DELIVERS
Truly 1—on—1, every session
Every tutor trained and overseen by our Head of Instruction
Plan built around your student’s specific gaps
Written update after every single session
Hourly billing, no contracts, Good Fit Guarantee
Wherever your student is right now, that's where we begin.
Students begin test prep at different
moments for different reasons and
each one is valid. Our role is to meet
them where they are, build a plan that
fits their life, and support them with calm,
consistent structure.
What makes the biggest difference is not
when they start, but the partnership they
step into: steady attendance, consistent
practice, and a genuine desire to improve.
Here’s how we guide students starting at
different points in their high school journey:
-
Ideal for students who want a head start or are advanced in math.
Most students who start in late 10th grade begin between May and September. This reduces pressure during junior year. For sophomores finishing Algebra 2, early junior-year testing helps preserve their math foundation before it fades.
Good fit for students who:
Prefer slow, steady preparation
Are completing Algebra 2 early and may benefit from a junior-year fall test
Want to reduce junior-year stress and spread out testing
-
When many students begin and momentum builds quickly.
Students in the middle of junior year have completed most of Algebra 2 and are ready for structured prep. Starting between January and March allows for a first test in spring with retakes built naturally into summer or early fall.
Good fit for students who:
Want to finish testing before senior year
Have a busy summer ahead
Are ready to apply strategy to the bulk of Algebra 2 content
-
A strong option once APs and finals quiet down.
Starting after April works well for students who find it easier to focus once the school year wraps. Summer prep is calmer, and retakes in August, October, or November align with early senior-year deadlines.
Good fit for students who:
Prefer starting at the end of Algebra 2
Want to focus on GPA first, then test scores
Want to complete testing by early senior year
-
For students ready to push from strong to standout.
These students benefit from customized timelines focused on test-maker thinking, advanced strategy, and targeted drills that move scores from “good” to “great” and into the highest percentiles (1500+ on the SAT | 34+ composite on the ACT).
Good fit for students who:
Already have a strong baseline score
Aim for selective colleges, honors programs, or competitive merit scholarships
Thrive with precision-level coaching and advanced strategy work

HOW IT WORKS
We combine expert teaching, adaptive strategy, and real-time practice data to build a plan around how your student actually thinks and learns.
Expert, dedicated tutors: Your student works one-on-one with tutors who collaborate closely with Marley, our Head of Instruction, Every session is strategic and fully tailored.
Proven teaching model: We follow the gradual release approach: I do, we do, you do, Students see strategies modeled, practice with guidance, then apply them independently.
Smart weekly structure: Most students meet for two hours per week, one Math and one Reading/Writing session. As progress builds, sessions shift from foundations to timing, stamina, and test-day strategy.
Real-time progress tracking: Homework is delivered through a virtual platform that tracks timing and accuracy. After every session, families receive a note on what was covered and what comes next.

-
We don't publish a single average score increase because it can be misleading. Moving from an 1100 to a 1250 requires building core skills and test familiarity. Moving from a 1400 to a 1550 requires precision-level work on a completely different set of problems. Quoting one number for both would be dishonest. What we can promise is a clear plan, measurable practice tests, and a written update after every session so you're tracking progress the whole way through. There are no surprises on test day. Most students who attend consistently and do the work between sessions see real, meaningful improvement. We'll give you a realistic projection after the first diagnostic.
-
We match students with tutors based on personality, learning style, schedule, and communication style. Once we learn more about your student, we work with Marley, our Head of Instruction, to find the right fit. We'll send you the tutor's background before the first session so you know exactly who your child is working with. Every tutor also collaborates with Marley throughout the engagement, so your student always has a team behind them, not just one person's opinion. If the fit isn't right, we'll adjust. That conversation is always welcome.

We understand the instinct. Screens are everywhere and wanting a real human in the room makes complete sense. We do have limited in-person availability in Manhattan at a slightly higher rate. That said, the families who start in-person almost always shift to virtual over time, because the scheduling flexibility ends up being worth more than the physical presence. Our sessions are fully interactive, not passive screen time. And since the SAT itself is now fully digital, practicing online actually mirrors the test environment. It's worth trying virtual first before committing to the logistics of in-person.
-
Rarely. While more time allows for a calmer pace, many students start later and still make meaningful progress. Some, especially athletes or students with packed schedules, actually thrive in a focused sprint. When the test becomes the primary focus for six to eight weeks, we'll often increase to three hours per week. That concentrated effort can be very effective. March doesn't have to be your only shot either. A three-test plan built across spring, summer, and early fall takes pressure off any single date.
-
Most students complete around 20 hours over their first test cycle, typically one Math and one Reading/Writing hour per week. Students aiming for selective schools or elite scores may continue beyond that with a more targeted plan. We'll outline a realistic recommendation after your consultation, based on your student's baseline, goals, school schedule, and preferred test dates. There's no minimum, and you're never locked into anything.
-
It depends, and it's a smart question to ask early. Many families applying to test-optional schools still choose to test because a strong score can strengthen an application, provide context for GPA, or unlock merit scholarships. For some students, especially those with lower baselines or very limited time, testing may not be the best investment. We'll tell you honestly if we think it's not worth it. That kind of straight talk is part of why families trust us. If you're unsure, that's exactly what a consultation is for.

Yes, regularly. Our tutors adjust pacing and structure based on how your student will actually test, including extended time. ADHD changes the approach in meaningful ways: we build sessions with intentional structure, clear goals, and active engagement rather than passive review. When the tutor match is right and the student knows what to expect each week, focus tends to improve on its own. The tutor match matters especially for this group, and we take that seriously.

Yes. You only pay for the sessions your student uses, and we can adjust pacing around APs, sports, finals, travel, or anything else that comes up. High school schedules are chaotic. The plan is built to flex with them.
“Mike and his team were fantastic to work with. Highly customized support, incredibly transparent communication throughout, and worth every penny. My son’s score increased almost 300 points after just a few weeks of working with Wagner Prep.”
